Spring Checklist

Spring is finally here, and it is time to get outdoors after a long Minnesota winter. Plans and visions for gardens, landscapes and outdoor living spaces can now become a reality! By compiling this checklist, we hope to provide direction to inquiries we commonly receive this time of year. As always, please feel free to contact us if you have any additional questions.

Remove winter protection from plants and trees. This includes tree wrap, rose cones and excess mulch used to protect plants from extreme weather conditions.

Divide and replant perennials which are overgrown or that you might want to share with others. The following varieties tolerate division/transplanting quite well: chrysanthemums, delphinium, anemone, fall asters, daylilies and Shasta daisies.

Plant frost-tolerant pansies and violas (Johnny jump-ups). These hearty flowers add a punch of color to landscapes for minimal cost and time investment.

Apply Preen or another pre-emergent weed killer to landscape and flower beds to minimize weeds germinating in areas where they will need to be pulled later.

Fertilize trees and shrubs with a water soluble fertilizer. Be sure to use an acid rich fertilizer (ex. Miracid) for acid loving plants such as dogwoods, evergreens, rhododendron, azaleas and hydrangea.

Fertilize spring flowering bulbs with commercial bulb fertilizer after the flowers wither. Leave the foliage intact until it begins to yellow as this helps to pass nutrients to the bulbs for next year.

Fertilize lawns with a crabgrass preventer.

Dig up garden beds if they are not too wet. If the soil is saturated, wait until it is dry enough to crumble in your hand before tilling.

Plan new landscape designs and gardens. Give your entire yard year-round interest, noting winter habits of plantings as well. We would be happy to assist you in selecting flowers, shrubs and trees that would provide seasonal color to match your specific horticultural environment.

Check hoses and sprinklers for leaks, as even a small leak can result in large quantities of water wasted, resulting in higher utility bills. If you are interested in professional sprinkler system design and maintenance, please refer to our resources link to find contact information for Steve at Clearwater Irrigation.

Bring lawn mowers and other lawn care power equipment in for spring maintenance before the growing season is in full swing.

Top dress flower and planting beds with new mulch to give a fresh look to your entire landscape.
